LORAIN ? The Lorain Fire Department is currently investigating a fire that started on the outside of a home last night.
According to Assistant Chief Dennis Livchak, firefighters were called to 1854 E. 30th St. at 11 p.m. for a house fire.
The Fire Department arrived on the scene three minutes later, and the fire was controlled by 11:25 p.m.
Jessica Maynard, resident of the home, told firefighters that she was home when she saw a bright light through the window. A neighbor then ran over and told Maynard her home was on fire.
Livchak said Maynard tried to extinguish the fire with a garden hose, but, by that time, the fire was too big.
According to Livchak, the fire began at the rear of the home and quickly engulfed it, catching the attic on fire as well. Firefighters managed to put the outside fire out and made entry into the attic to extinguish the flames.
Livchak said Maynard, her children and a cat and ferret safely escaped the home. He estimates the fire caused $30,000 in damages to the home and $10,000 in damages to the contents.
The Red Cross is providing Maynard?s family with temporary housing.
Livchak said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
