Shared Parenting Strategies: Creating a Shared Family Schedule ...

Shared Parenting Strategies: Creating a Shared Family?Schedule

Since no research supports a given number of hours or days that children should spend with each parent, the information provided discusses what arrangements seem to work for other co-parents. As parents, you are in the best position to determine what schedule will meet the needs of your child.

Before designing a plan for your family, you should consider your own unique situation. The Family Assessment set out below will help you develop a framework for your individualized plan.

?

Raising children is difficult for all parents. When parents live in separate homes the challenges are greater because relationships are more complicated. Sometimes one parent disagrees about how much time a child should spend with the other. Before planning a time-sharing arrangement for your family, it is helpful to consider:

 • ?The age, temperament and?social adjustment of each child.
 • Any special needs of each?child (medical, developmental, educational, emotional?or social).
 • The quality of?relationships between siblings and any other extended family members.
 • Each child?s daily?schedule.
 • Care giving?responsibilities of each parent before the separation.
 • How you would like to?share responsibilities both now and in the future.
 • Availability of each?parent as a caregiver.
 • Potential flexibility of?each parent?s work schedule.
 • Distance?between each parent?s home, workplace, and children?s schools.
 • The ability of parents to?communicate and cooperate with each other.
 • The ability and?willingness of each parent to learn basic care giving skills such as feeding, changing and bathing a young child; preparing a child for daycare?or school; taking responsibility for helping with homework; assessing and?attending to each child?s special emotional and social needs.

Often, someone who has not been an active parent prior to separation may wish to become more involved afterward. The initial parenting plan should allow that parent enough time to develop a closer relationship with the child, while at the same time recognizing the existing relationship. As the parent-child bond strengthens, changes can be made to the schedule.

These considerations should remain a basic reference as children move from one developmental stage to another and as time-sharing arrangements are modified from time to time.

Every young star has to go through the certain rites of passage: your first starring role, landing a platinum debut album, first fake tabloid headline. On Saturday, Justin Bieber earned his stripes by allegedly getting into an altercation with a paparazzi photographer.

According to TMZ, Bieber is a suspect in a criminal battery investigation after he got into it with a photographer on Sunday at a mall in Calabasas, California, where the singer lives. The site reported that the unnamed photographer was attempting to snap a shot of Bieber when a physical altercation took place between them.

The photographer called 911 after the incident, but when the police arrived Bieber and girlfriend Selena Gomez had already left the scene. The camera man was transported to a local hospital by ambulance after complaining of pain in his upper torso and released a short time later.

He filed a police report naming Bieber,18, as the culprit and police are now investigating the incident as a misdemeanor battery case and are looking to speak to Justin and Gomez and other witnesses. Police were told by witnesses that the photographer had been blocking Bieber's car as the "Boyfriend" singer was trying to leave the mall. After Bieber exited his car and asked the man to move, a scuffle broke out when he would not.

A spokesperson for Bieber could not be reached for comment.

TMZ also reported that several witnesses claimed that after the fight a lawyer approached the shooter and said he could get "a lot of money" out of the incident and advised the paparazzo to call for an ambulance and file a police report.

Increasing Home Resale Value thru New Roofing

Buying a house is probably one of the biggest investments you will ever make in your life. When you plan to move to a new home and sell your current one, you have to make sure that you will get the most money out of it. One way to do this is by increasing the resale value of your home.

Think back to the time when you first bought your house in Manchester. The first thing you may have observed is the appearance of the home's exterior. Aesthetics have a significant impact on house sales, thus, a more beautiful house has a higher resale value. To get the most money out of selling your home, you have to make a good first impression on buyers; you have to take care of the curb appeal.

There are many things you can do to increase the resale value of your home. For instance, you have to make sure that the exterior of your house looks neat. Also keep in mind that you have to consider how the other houses in your neighborhood looks like. You may consider having your front lawn or backyard landscaped or you can remodel some sections of the house. If there are any old or worn out components, replace them immediately. Take the roof as an example; not only does it affect the visual appeal of your home, but it also plays a great role in weather protection.

Replacing an old, damaged roof does not just increase the curb appeal of your home, but it also provides better functionality. New roofing also offers better protection and insulation; this greatly adds to your home's resale value. If you plan to do this, you have to find reliable roofing companies and choose the appropriate roofing materials.

To make your home more valuable, you can contact a Manchester roofing company to help you improve the roof. Roofing companies offer different roofing materials, each with its own advantages and drawbacks. Professional roofing contractors can help you decide what type of roof is best for your home.

Your replacement roofing should match your home's current design or architectural style. For example, if your home has a rustic feel, it might look awkward if you have sleek metal roof installed on it. Fortunately, different types of roofing Manchester contractors offer are available in various colors or designs, giving you more options.

You also have to consider the functions of the different roofing Manchester NH offers. For example, some materials are easier to maintain than others. By selecting the most befitting material, your home can attract more potential buyers. To know more about roof replacement, go to ehow.com/info_8333027_increased-resale-value-new-roof.html.

World's largest release of comprehensive human cancer genome data helps speed discoveries

World's largest release of comprehensive human cancer genome data helps speed discoveries

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

To speed progress against cancer and other diseases, the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital ? Washington University Pediatric Cancer Genome Project today announced the largest-ever release of comprehensive human cancer genome data for free access by the global scientific community. The amount of information released more than doubles the volume of high-coverage, whole genome data currently available from all human genome sources combined. This information is valuable not just to cancer researchers, but also to scientists studying almost any disease.

The release of this data was announced as a part of a perspective published in Nature Genetics online May 29.

The 520 genome sequences released today are matched sets of normal and tumor tissue samples from 260 pediatric cancer patients. The Pediatric Cancer Genome Project is expected to sequence more than 1,200 genomes by year's end. Each sample is sequenced at a quality control level known as 30-fold coverage, ensuring maximum accuracy. St. Jude researchers are analyzing the genomic sequences to determine the differences between each child's normal and cancerous cells to pinpoint the causes of more than a half-dozen of the most deadly childhood cancers, an effort which has already produced a number of key discoveries reported in top scientific journals.

"This effort has generated more discoveries than we thought possible," said James Downing, M.D., St. Jude scientific director who leads the project at St. Jude. "We want to make this information available to the broader scientific community so that, collectively, we can explore new treatment options for these children. By sharing the information even before we analyze it ourselves, we're hoping that other researchers can use this rich resource for insights into many other types of diseases in children and adults."

Launched in early 2010, the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project is the world's largest effort and investment to date to understand the genetic origins of childhood cancers. The three-year project will cost an estimated $65 million. St. Jude is covering $55 million of the cost, including a $20 million commitment from Kay Jewelers, a long-standing partner of St. Jude. This is the first major privately funded human genome sequencing project to share its data as soon as it becomes available. To date, this type of open access has largely been restricted to government-funded efforts. Non-government efforts are typically treated as proprietary.

"Setting this precedent reflects a commitment to freely sharing information that has been a hallmark of St. Jude since we opened our doors 50 years ago," said Dr. William Evans, St. Jude director and CEO. "The Pediatric Cancer Genome Project is a one-of-a-kind effort, so the information has the potential to accelerate disease research worldwide."

Researchers worldwide will be able to access the sequence data via the Web-based European Genome-Phenome Archive, which provides large datasets for free access by researchers on request: www.ebi.ac.uk/ega/organisations/EGAO00000000046.

While most cancer genome initiatives focus only on genes, which make up a small portion of the genome, the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project researchers have taken a different approach. They are sequencing the entire genome ? all the DNA ? in each patient's tumor. This provides a richer, more complete picture of the DNA changes underlying the development and progression of each patient's disease.

"This approach has been more valuable that anyone could have predicted," says Richard K. Wilson, Ph.D., director of The Genome Institute at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. "We have identified unusual, 'cryptic' changes in many patients' cancer cells that we would not have found using other methods. We are pleased to be able to share this data with the research community in hopes that others can build upon our initial discoveries."

The Pediatric Cancer Genome Project has already yielded significant insights into aggressive childhood cancers of the retina, brainstem and blood published in leading international scientific journals. Project researchers working on the eye tumor retinoblastoma discovered clues to the tumor's rapid development that enabled them identify a promising new anti-cancer agent. Investigators studying a deadly childhood leukemia known as early T-precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ETP-ALL) found unexpected genetic alterations that could change diagnosis and treatment for patients with this disease. Efforts to understand the genetic changes underlying a brainstem tumor called diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) found that a startling 78 percent of the tumors carried changes in two genes not previously tied to cancer. Most recently, project researchers identified a gene mutation associated with a chronic and often fatal form of neuroblastoma?a discovery that provides the first clue about the genetic basis of the long-recognized but poorly understood link between treatment outcome and age at diagnosis.

"These findings would not have been possible without the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project," said Downing. He said these results offer new strategies for finding and treating these high-risk cancers. The project has also demonstrated the marked differences between pediatric and adult cancers, underscoring the importance of developing therapies specifically for childhood cancers.

Samsung Claims 4G Galaxy Tab Isn't Directly Competing with iPad 2

Published on 05-27-2012 01:35 AM

As of right now, both Samsung is amidst fighting Apple?s requests for a preliminary injunction against its Galaxy Tab with the argument that the 4Gcapablity if its tablet means it does not directly compete with Apple?s 3G equipped iPad 2. It was just earlier this month, Apple succeeded in reactivating a motion for a preliminary injunction against its rival?s tablet. The appeals court overturned Judge Lucy Koh?s denial of an injunction for the Galaxy Tab, but left the ruling against an injunction on smartphones.

According to FOSS Patents, Samsung filed for an opposition to Apple?s claims. Florian Mueller states that Apple is ?starting from a far better position? with its new motion for an injunction, although a win is far from being guaranteed. In order to win, Apple would need to convince the court of four factors: ?likelihood of success on the merits; likelihood of irreparable harm; balancer of the equities; public interest.? After the appeal court overturned Koh?s assertion that Apple?s design patent was invalid, Apple is more likely to convince the court of the merits of its case. Meanwhile, both Koh and the federal Court of Appeals are in agreement that the case for irreparable harm has been established. Mueller did note that at least one circuit judge believed Apple should prevail on all four factors.

Mueller continued to note that ?Judge O?Malley indicated between the lines that she considers Samsung a reckless infringer whose Galaxy Tab 10.1 should be shut down sooner rather than later, and she clearly wants patent holders to have great access to injunctive relief.? A large part of Samsung?s argument against the injunction in Friday?s filing is based off the claim that, since Apple lacks a 4G version of the iPad 2, the 4G Galaxy Tab doesn?t compete directly with the device. The company also claimed that an injunction would disrupt its partnership with carriers since Samsung has teamed up with carriers to sell the Galaxy Tab 10.1 with 4G contracts.

It was noted that Samsung?s argument is ?not without merit? though it was also believed that it?s ?too weak to avoid a preliminary injunction.? Samsung didn?t take into account that ?4G devices are backward-compatible? and that customers might use them in off-line mode or on 3G networks as well. ?Even if someone thinks that 4G is desirable, I doubt that the number of customers who are out to buy only a 4G tablet is limited.?

The report continues to point out that Samsung is likely to lose during the injunction phase because it could have modified its product in the time since Apple first filed its preliminary injunction motion but chose not to. The Korean company released a redesigned Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Germany last year in order to work around a sales ban in the country.

Tuna record Fukushima pollution

Pacific Bluefin tuna caught off the coast of California have been found to have radioactive contamination from last year's Fukushima nuclear accident.

The fish would have picked up the pollution while swimming in Japanese waters, before then moving to the far side of the ocean.

Scientists stress that the fish are still perfectly safe to eat.

However, the case does illustrate how migratory species can carry pollution over vast distances, they say.

"It's a lesson to us in how interconnected eco-regions can be, even when they may be separated by thousands of miles," Nicholas Fisher, a professor of marine sciences at Stony Brook University, New York, told BBC News.

Fisher and colleagues report their study in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

They examined the muscle tissues of 15 Bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) taken from waters off San Diego in August 2011, just a few months after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

These were animals whose parents would have spawned in Japanese waters and spent one to years locally before heading to feeding grounds in the eastern Pacific.

All the fish examined in the study showed elevated levels of radioactive caesium - the isotopes 134 and 137.

Caesium-137 is present in seawater anyway as a result of the fallout from atomic weapons testing, but the short, two-year half-life of caesium-134 means the contamination can be tied directly to Fukushima. There is no other explanation for the isotope's presence.

The measured concentrations were about 10 times the total caesium radioactivity seen in tuna specimens taken from before the accident.

As a control, the team also examined Yellowfin tuna, which are largely residential in the eastern Pacific.

Professor Nicholas Fisher was 'stunned' to find the radioactive signal in bluefin tuna.

These animals showed no difference in their pre- or post-Fukushima concentrations.

The research is likely to get attention because Bluefin tuna is an iconic species and a highly valuable fishery - thousands of tonnes are landed annually.

But consumers should have no health concerns about eating California-caught tuna from last year, the team says.

The levels of radioactivity are well within permitted limits, and below those from other radioisotopes that occur naturally in the environment, such as potassium-40.

"The potassium was about 30 times higher than the combined radio-caesium levels. If you calculate how much additional radioactivity there is in the Pacific Bluefin tuna caught in California relative the natural background - it's about 3%," said Prof Fisher.

The scientists even calculated how much radioactivity might have been present in the fish before they swam across the Pacific (it would have fallen over time) and figured it could have been 50% above background levels; but, again, this would still have met the legal requirements for safe consumption.

Tuna caught in the coming months will be subjected to new tests. These animals would have spent much longer in Japanese waters and so conceivably could have a very different pollution load.

The team also believes the investigation should be extended to other migratory species that frequent Japanese waters.

Fukushima pollution is potentially a very useful tool to trace the origin and timing of animal movements. The ratio of caesium 134 to 137 could be used like a clock to work out when and how long a particular migration took.

"This information might be useful in conservation efforts or in managing fisheries," said Prof Fisher.

Washington Nationals And Stephen Strasburg Take On The Atlanta Braves At 4:00.

ATLANTA - JUNE 28: Starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg #37 of the Washington Nationals waits to pitch in the first inning against the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field on June 28, 2010 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

Winning game one of three in Atlanta with Ross Detwiler struggling on the hill puts Washington in a good position with Nationals' right-hander Stephen Strasburg on the mound this afternoon in Turner Field and Gio Gonzalez set to follow tomorrow in the 8:05 pm EDT ESPN Sunday Night Baseball game. "It's big. I look at every game as being big," Davey Johnson said after the Nats were able to beat Braves' right-hander Tim Hudson, who'd historically caused the Nationals trouble. "Certainly going against arguably one of their best pitchers, and to jump on him in the first inning and hold on is huge," Johnson said, "So we'll see how it plays out, but I like the way we're set up."

Strasburg's looking to bounce back from two starts in which his work on the mound was overshadowed by post game revelations, first about an uncomfortable situation with some misplaced "Hot Stuff" and then in his last start concerns about a tight bicep...

Star-divide

The Nats' 23-year-old '09 no.1 overall pick pitched 9.0 innings total in his last two starts, throwing 81 pitches and striking out five in 4.0 innings against the Padres in which he gave up seven hits, four runs and two walks and 90 pitches in 5.0 innings against the Orioles in which he surrendered four hits, three runs, one earned and a walk while striking out eight O's batters. Davey Johnson chalked the bicep issues in his last start up to "fatigue or overwork" on Strasburg's part in preparing for his start after the frustrating outing vs San Diego. Strasburg said the same, telling reporters, including the Washington Times' Amanda Comak that it was just "normal fatigue" that's to be expected as he continues to work his way back from Tommy John combined with the results of overdoing between starts.

"'It's something I've just got to be smart about,'" the Washington Times' reporter quoted Strasburg explaining, "'(Overworking after a bad start) is the thing I need to change. I can't change my routine just because of an outcome.'"

Strasburg takes on the Braves tonight. Chipper Jones made headlines last night when he told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Carroll Rogers that the Nats' right-hander has, "'... the best repertoire of pitches that I?ve seen on any one single pitcher.'" The 40-year-old, 19-year veteran (who's 2 for 4 with a walk and a K vs Stras) called the Nationals' starter, "a hybrid of Kerry Wood in his prime and [Justin] Verlander," while adding that Strasburg's change really sets him apart:

"'(Strasburg?s) is a 90-plus mph split that falls off the table. When you?re going up there getting geared up for 95, 96 mph and he throws you 90 and the bottom drops out of it, it?s a pretty lethal combination.'"

? Here's the lineup that will take the field behind Strasburg tonight after they try to give him an early lead like Ross Detwilter got last night in the top of the first:

Solar Cell Efficiency Breathrough from Northwestern University Researchers

1x1.trans Solar Cell Efficiency Breathrough from Northwestern University Researchers ecofriend solar cell researchers northwestern university efficiency dye Breathrough

A team of researchers at the Northwestern University has advanced up with an innovative breakthrough in solar cell efficiency. The researchers have shaped up a reliable dye-sensitized solar panel that is cheaper and can ensure better power efficiency than the regular cells.

The inventive solar technology is really a variant of the Gr?tzel cell, a kind of dye-sensitized solar cell, which makes use of semiconductor titanium oxide in place of the conventional silicon material. The outcome is that the solar cell, which is named after the Swiss chemist Michel Gr?tzel, delivers better power efficiency and is inexpensive, less toxic and certainly environmental in several aspects, the researchers claim.

In fact, the breakthrough the researchers have achieved is their successful attempt to solve a persisting problem with the Gr?tzel design. Since it makes use of an organic liquid as its electrolyte, there is a chance that it may leak in various conditions. The leaked liquid is threatening because it will corrode the entire cell. Well, it is here the Northwestern University researchers have proved their credential well. They developed a fresh material called the CsSnI3 that can solidify the liquid and prevent seepage under any condition.

The CsSnI3 is a very slim film compound, which merges cesium, iodine and tin. It is basically added in liquid form to dye-coat nanoparticles, but it turns to a solid mass so that there won?t be any leakage issue. Well, as per the lead researcher, Robert P.H Chang, it is the first demo of a solid-state dye-sensitized solar cell that can definitely ensure better efficiency than the current solar technologies.

Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 Review - Computers|Gadgets|Games N ...

The expansion of the Samsung realm of wi-fi-only smart devices continues with the Galaxy Player 4.2, complete with two front-facing speakers, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and a delightful display. This device is largely a Galaxy S II at half-power and with no mobile connection ? but keeping each of the media-playing powers of a tool deeply integrated within the extended Samsung family of Smart TVs, apps, and speakers galore. Here we?ll look at the way it feels yet again to work with the Samsung mobile media player, here in its most ideal shape and form yet.

Hardware

Unlike its slightly more massive cousin that you could see in our Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 Review, this device is very thin and definitely one of the crucial lightest smart devices available on the market today. The one lighter device we have seen along these same lines is one you?ll discover in our Samsung Galaxy Player 3.6 Review ? a tiny device, to make certain. This 4.2-inch relative of these Galaxy Players has lots of the same specifications but here could have the foremost ideal combination of palm-fitting form factor and media playing prowess.

Here you will find a tool with Android 2.3 Gingerbread ? in no way the foremost advanced software available from Google or Samsung for that matter, but enhanced in different ways in which make it equitable in a number of choice ways. You can see all the applications you may have open instantly by holding down the physical center button at the front of the telephone. Access Google search by holding down the menu button. Turn the total device on, the display off, and adjust the volume from the right side of the device, this handset having both its power and volume buttons sitting right under your thumb ? if you?re right-handed, that is.

The two speakers at the front of this device remind us that Samsung has begun moving to this sort of model. We?ve seen this same cue on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 as well ? have a peek at our Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Review to see how we enjoyed this feature just as well there as we did here. The vast majority of smartphones working with exterior speakers have been on the back, made to bounce sound off of the palm of your hand and reserve space on the front of the phone for screen space. Here Samsung is making it clear that this is not a smartphone, but a device made to play games, play music, and play movies first and foremost.

The Galaxy Player 4.2 has a display that?s right on the sweet-spot for what I?d consider a perfect screen size. Most adults with mid to large-sized hands should be able to reach the entirety of the device?s display with their thumb without needing two hands to do it, and the ideal location of the power button and volume button only adds to that ideal media-controller situation.

This device is able to connect with DLNA displays with the app called AllShare, Bluetooth devices with Bluetooth 3.0, and of course wi-fi internet. You?ll be connecting to your computer for media transfer with the free desktop-connected app Samsung Kies, and your USB connection is 2.0. You can play AVI, MP4, 3GP, WMV, ASF, MKV, and FLV videos as well as MP3, WMA, Ogg, FLAC, AAC, and WAV audio files. Inside your basic Music application you?ve got a sound levels controller called SoundAlive which has a set of presets such as Rock, Dance, Jazz, and Auto ? and there?s a couple of customizable sets as well.

Software

Here we see Samsung?s most advanced version of media-player-ready Android 2.3 Gingerbread with TouchWiz enhanced for a rapidly evolving Ice Cream Sandwich-heavy environment. It?s unclear why this device does not simply have Android 4.0, but perhaps it is just that ? updating this device mightn?t be so simple. It?s not extremely necessary to have that newest version of Google?s mobile OS for media and game playing, and that is what this device is made for without a doubt.

Below you?ll get a glimpse of how quick the Galaxy Player 4.2 works with its installed software, and we?ve got a couple of benchmarks here as well for you to compare with the rest of the smartphone and media player world.

Hands-on

Sound Quality

Samsung has never disappointed with their ability to place excellent speaker systems in the smallest of devices, and this is no exception to the rule. Through the earbuds included with the Galaxy Player 4.2 or through higher-quality headphones, you?ll not be let down by the headphone jack on this machine. The same is true of the two impressive speakers on the front of the device, each of them perfectly strong enough to use in a crowded bus station or on your own in the darkness.

Camera and Battery

This device has a front-facing camera good enough for basic video chat, a back facing camera with 2-megapixels imaging quality power, and both are fairly good. Compared to the kings of the smartphone world, they?re not so fabulous, but for taking photos for Facebook or Twitter, you?ll be fine. Have a peek at a few examples below and behold all 2 megapixels of fury.

Battery life on this device is fantastic if only because there?s no mobile data to be sucking it down hours after hour. We?ve gotten at least a day?s use out of this smart handset if not a day and a half after web browsing, streaming video over Wi-fi, and playing music through the whole test. The Galaxy Player 4.2 is a very well-balanced device as far as battery life goes, that?s for sure.

Wrap-Up

If I had to choose one Galaxy Player from the whole lineup released or announced thus far to work with, this would be it. The Galaxy Player 3.6 is just a bit too small to want to work with, and the Galaxy Player 5.0 is much too thick to want to have anything to do with. The only misgiving I?ve got with this particular model is the slightly less than stellar lighting in the buttons on the front of the device. This seemingly out-of-character feature does not look great, but does not hinder the operation of the device in any way.

Here at $199 this may well be the best deal on the mobile market if you are not in the market for a tablet-sized device. Later this year we might be seeing sub-$199 tablets at 7-inches with next-level processing power. For now, $200 with no contract for an entertaining device consisting of this with Android is a reasonably decent price. Find shops both online and offline to buy this device through Samsung and gain entertainment in excess.

Technological savvy part of senior's drive to help others

ST. CHARLES ? Brian Ricketts had no trouble falling in love with robots.

After all, as he tells it, robotics have become an essential part of his life.

?There aren?t many people that can say they have a microprocessor in their leg,? Ricketts said, with a sly grin.

For as long as he can remember, Ricketts, a graduating senior at St. Charles North High School, has been fascinated by computers, the technological devices they power and the way they run.

At the age of 7 or 9, he began programming computers.

And those speaking with the young man or his mother, Julie Ricketts, of St. Charles, easily could be overwhelmed by the tales they might share of the tinkering Brian has done with household appliances and devices.

His mother noted, for instance, that his favorite toy when he was 2 years old was a surge suppressor.

Lately, those urges have turned to video games, which Brian creates himself, and gaming systems, which he might take apart and rewrite some code to make it do things it otherwise could not.

He reprogrammed a Microsoft Xbox Kinect system to allow users to ?fly? a virtual aircraft by moving their hands or speaking commands.

?It?s how I like to spend my free time,? Ricketts said.

So when the opportunity arose for Ricketts to join the competitive robotics team, PWNAGE Team 2949, sponsored by St. Charles manufacturer Genesis Automation, he did not think on the decision too long.

?I used to be in the Boy Scouts, and I tried piano lessons,? said Ricketts. ?But then I found robotics. And I thought, ?This is where I belong.??

Ricketts joined the team in his senior year, becoming one of the later members of a group that is interested and skilled in engineering, computer programming and other disciplines related to robotics.

The team takes its robots to regional competitions against those designed by other high school teams in task-based contests.

Teams were judged this year on their robots? abilities to move about a playing court, pick up foam basketballs and throw them through small basketball hoops.

Ricketts helped program the robot and said he loved every minute of the work and the competition.

Marsha Brown, technology and engineering instructor at St. Charles North, said Ricketts? infatuation with robotics should not be a surprise to anyone.

?There are things I?m learning from him,? Brown said. ?With the programming, and the things he?s able to do, it?s just nuts sometimes.?

In a class project earlier this year, students were asked to create a machine that could accurately launch ping-pong balls.

Ricketts? team created an accurate launcher. But then they went further, making their machine mobile.

?It did shock me when it moved around the room, because no one had told me,? Brown said.

Ricketts still laughs about that project.

?You should have seen the look on her face,? he said, chuckling.

Brown said Ricketts? penchant for exceeding expectations, along with his knowledge and ability, is what sets him apart.

?He is just so knowledgable about these things,? Brown said. ?So passionate and so driven.?

Ricketts, however, demonstrated his drive in more than just robotics projects or at-home tinkering.

At age 6, he was diagnosed with cancer in his left leg. Despite treatment, the cancer spread to his knee. Ultimately, doctors amputated his leg at the thigh.

Not until about two years ago, after a fight that lasted almost a decade, did doctors declare the cancer in remission.

In the years since the amputation, Ricketts learned to walk with a prosthesis, including a recent model that includes technology to help prevent him from falling.

?So I guess you can say I have experience with a robot on my knee,? he said with a grin.

Ricketts enrolled at DePaul University and will attend classes in the fall. He will major in computer science.

He said he has not decided yet how he wants to use his technological abilities, although he did mention a fascination with virtual reality and autonomous automobiles. And he wasn?t averse to defense applications, he said.

?That would be kind of cool, maybe working with drones,? Ricketts said.

No matter what he does, Ricketts said he wants his work to focus on one thing:

?I want to make technologies to make people?s lives easier. It?s so important to me.?

Story Updated: May 25, 2012 at 5:35 PM MDT

BILLINGS - Ford Motor Company makes a big donation to help women protect themselves against cancer.

St. Vincent Healthcare's Mobile Mammography Coach travels throughout eastern and central Montana to provide free mammograms for women in need. Ford gave St. V's $25,000 to support the coach on Friday. The donation will help women who do not have insurance or who are underinsured.

"A lot of women are faced with a decision of putting food on the table or caring for other elements of their family, and so they forego a mammogram. So this is a big deal for us in terms of being able to provide them resources for a mammogram," said David Irion, the president of the St. Vincent Healthcare Foundation.

St. V's provides 13,000 mammograms every year. A quarter of those are done on the mobile coach.

Get the Best Health Benefits from Massage Therapy

?

Massage is a best way to lighten up and relax the body muscles. Any massage therapy has now proven to be the best means to return many health benefits. A massage can also improve the mental stability by reducing the physical burden. Nowadays, lots of health and fitness centers tend to offer massage treatment programs that are performed by skilled and experienced masseur or masseuse.

The majority of health problems crop up when the regular blood flow is restricted in the vessels. In such cases, the heart cannot drive the blood capably and eventually causes health problems affecting other organs, muscles and the body skin. Blood is a main carrier of oxygen in a human body and without it, different body parts start to deflate.

A massage therapy helps to sustain the blood circulation at normal levels in a body.

The massage therapists are well trained to apply suitable pressure all over the body. Most of the people tend to feel a bit discomfort in their very first massage session, but there is nothing to worry. Just stay calm and let your therapist do his/her job. After the completion of the session, you?ll experience the ultimate comfort and relaxation in your body. Your tendons and muscles would be more unstrained than ever.

As the massage improves the circulation of blood, your brain gets the right quantity of blood for its proper functioning, this in turn improves your thinking ability. A massage therapy is an exceptional way to perk up the brain function too. A number of different massages are involved in one treatment session. Some of the massage therapies make use of special exotic oils with aroma to help you relax. Some of the therapies focus and massage of a single body part, whereas others perform on the whole body.

Normally, the fitness center offer different kinds of massage therapies, which might confuse you a little, especially while choosing a suitable treatment for you. You can consult your therapist, in order to get the accurate therapy, which will help you in future. You can also try out a specific massage type at your first visit and the remaining in the following sessions. Besides, the consultant would suggest the finest massage program for you depending on your health issues.

A massage treatment can take up to 30 minutes or a little more time. It will be best for you to let your masseur or masseuse decide your massage timings, as they know the best. It is true that the massage relaxes your body and mind, but if you are too intense about your troubles, you will not be able to get the full benefits out of your therapy. Take a minute or two to get your problems off your mind and be ready for the treatment.

All the massage treatments offer a large number of health benefits. If you are on any kind of medication, then it is recommended that you do not stop taking your pills and also opt for massage treatment sessions. Both, your medications and a massage therapy will do well to your health in a much faster manner.?

Police: British bandits foiled by glued-up bills

This undated photo provided by security company G4S shows bills treated with glue and dye as part of its new security system. British authorities said Wednesday, May 23, 2012, that three bandits were foiled when their attempt to pry open a stolen cash box ran up against the new security system that slathered the bills with glue. The bandits were part of a gang that ambushed a cash delivery man working for security company G4S in south London on Jan. 16, 2011. (AP) ? Three bandits were foiled in Britain when their attempt to pry open a stolen cash box ran up against a new security system that slathered the bills with glue.

Baffour Amponsah, 25, Brian Ocaya, 28, and Daniel Collins, also 28, were part of a gang that ambushed a cash delivery man working for security company G4S in south London on Jan. 16, 2011. The group stole his cash box but ran into trouble when they retreated to a parking lot to try to open it.

Gavin Windsor, a G4S director, said the company's cash boxes had recently been fitted with a new security system which coats the bills with glue ? along with dye and a colorless, traceable liquid known as "smart water" ? if it is tampered with.

"We now have a system within that box that guarantees that when it's activated, the glue and the dye and the smart water activates within the box and gives you complete coverage," Windsor said in a telephone interview. "For all intents and purposes it makes (the money) unusable."

Police said in a statement Wednesday the gang was spotted by a witness less than an hour after the robbery as they struggled with the glued-up bills. Plainclothes officers swooped in and arrested Amponsah and Ocaya at the scene; Collins was arrested several months later.

Amponsah pleaded guilty and received four years and two months in jail. Collins and Ocaya were sentenced to six years and six years and ten months respectively.

Although dye bombs and traceable solutions have long been used by security companies and law enforcement as a deterrent against cash robberies, Windsor said that using glue to gum up bills was a relatively new innovation, one he says his company and others have been working on.
