Recession didn't slow these franchises down

The recession put the brakes on many franchise chains? expansion ? but not all. For instance, the top fast-food chain by number of locations, Subway, added close to 6,000 restaurants from 2008-2010, the Milford, Conn.-based company reports.

The sandwich juggernaut?s recession-era expansion was the largest of any chain by a long ways, industry research firm FranData reports. The second fastest-growing franchise during that time period ? commercial-cleaning chain Jani-King of Addison, Texas ? added just over 4,500 new locations during the same period.

How did these booming franchises pull it off? For popular concepts with access to capital for expansion, a recession can be a bonanza. Prime real-estate locations come back on the market, and tenant-hungry landlords are willing to pay more for tenant improvements and cut lower-cost lease deals.

Subway spokesman Les Winograd says the sandwich chain?s positioning as a healthier fast-food alternative helped it advance during the down years. What drove the growth ? was it the cheaper real estate, more available prime locations, more agreeable landlords?

?Yes, yes, and yes,? Winograd replied.

Another factor in Subway?s favor is its relatively low startup cost for new franchisees, due in part to the fact that the concept requires no chefs, stoves or fryers. The franchise fee is just $15,000 and a traditional restaurant can be opened for around $250,000, where many fast-food chains require upwards of $750,000 or more.

When you?re already ubiquitous, where do you add more restaurants? A spreadsheet provided by the company shows growth was almost evenly split between domestic and overseas initiatives. The company is now in 100 countries, and top recession-era growth markets abroad were Brazil (more than 400 new stores), Germany, Australia, Mexico, France, China, Russia, and India, in that order.

The chain also looked for ?white space? on the map ? points lacking a big green-and-yellow Subway sign, that is ? in markets where it?s already a major presence, says Winograd. People will only drive so far for a sub sandwich, so in-filling existing markets was big, too.

California may have been one of the hardest-hit states in the depression, but it was Subway?s top expansion market in 2008-2010 with 459 new stores, followed by Texas and New York. Hard times also mean people looking for more affordable dining options, a shift where Subway is well-placed to benefit.

Forbes.com: The 10 best cities for finding employment right now

Another edge Subway had in the tough times is a focus on ?nontraditional? locations, many of which don?t take up much space. These alternative locales are now 20 percent of Subways new openings. There are Subways now on college campuses, inside a church, at car dealerships, and in several bowling alleys, Winograd notes.

Putting on some steam in a generally slow period can vault a franchise ahead of competitors. The spurt hasn?t stopped yet at Subway, either ? Winograd says the chain added another 2,100 units in 2011 and now has over 36,000 eateries.

By contrast, archrival toasted-sub chain Quiznos added about that many new locations over three years, from 2008-2010, which still earned it a spot on FranData?s top 10 fastest-growing recession-era companies list. But the addition of many new units doesn?t always tell the whole story ? overall unit count has fallen dramatically at Denver-based Quiznos in the past few years, with the chain reporting to the International Franchise Association in mid-2011 that it had just 2,772 locations in all.

Home Improvement ? Bathroom Redo- Step #1 | Wholesome ...

Walmart has a new website all about helping you make basic home improvement (DIY) projects simple, called Projects Made Simple.? They are providing step by step how-to videos (around 75 to 100 of them!) like painting an accent wall, installing a towel bar, and repairing a running toilet.? Accompanying each video is a product list and downloadable project guides.

I decided to try out hanging a towel bar. I actually got so inspired after thinking about which project to do that I totally redid the kids entire bathroom!? It?s something I?ve been wanting to do and this just pushed me to get the ball rolling.? Does that happen to you?? Hahaha, you do one thing and then it snowballs into ten more home improvement projects?? Please tell me I?m not the only one this happens to!

So, I watched the video on how to hang a towel bar.? You can see the video here:

After watching the video and printing the project sheet, I headed out to Walmart to pick up the supplies I needed.? I actually decided to pick up a towel bar and two coat hooks that matched the towel bar.? My thought was that I would hang the towel bar kind of low (so the kids could use it and it would be the right height) and the hooks would be perfect for the kids to hang their own towels (and easier for my littles).

One things I did differently was that first, I marked off where the studs in the wall were so I could decided if I could hang the towel bar on studs or if I would need to use the anchors.? It just happened to work out that where I wanted the towel bar and hooks there were studs.? Other than that, I followed the video exactly. Easy Peasy!

I just have a few finishing touches and the whole bathroom will be complete!? Stay tuned, I?ll be sharing the full makeover this week!

*Disclosure: I am a Walmart Mom. This post is sponsored by Walmart. ? Walmart has provided me with product and/or compensation in exchange for my time and efforts in creating this post. My participation is voluntary. As always, my opinion is my own.

Pregnant woman killed by family? | Fellowship of the Minds

Guess their religion?

You are looking at evil

Daily Mail:? A pregnant wife was smothered to death by her husband, his parents and his brother-in-law who later all claimed she may have been killed by an evil spirit, a court has heard.

Nalia?Mumtaz, 21, was pronounced dead at hospital after being rushed there by paramedics who found her lying lifeless and ashen faced on a bed at the family home. Her unborn child died with her.

Her husband Mohammed Mumtaz, 24, his father Zia Ul Haq?and mother Salma?Aslam, both 51, as well as his brother-in-law?Hammad Hassan, 24, all deny charges of murder and manslaughter.

At Birmingham Crown Court, prosecutor Christopher Hotten said the cultural context in which Mrs. Mumtaz met her death on July 8, 2009 was of importance, as were the religious beliefs of the defendants, described as a ?traditional Muslim family with an emphasis on religious observance?.

He asked the jury: ?Was she or may she have been possessed by an evil spirit which took her life as the defendants were to suggest both at the time and after her death?? ?Or may she have died as a result of some unknown or undetected illness?? ?Or will you be sure that, as we say, she was assaulted, smothered, by these four defendants all of whom admit they were present when she died??

Mrs. Mumtaz?was born in Pakistan and willingly entered into an arranged marriage with her husband, then a student at Wolverhampton University, in August 2007.? She came to Britain for the first time the following May after obtaining a visa and moved into his parents? modern, three bedroom detached home in Birmingham.? Mr. Hotten said she was attractive, bright and was ?thrilled? by the prospect of motherhood after falling pregnant in February 2009.

During her pregnancy, she was regularly seen by a GP and various midwives ? the last time two days before her death ? and both she and her unborn child appeared healthy.

But her parents said she phoned them at their home in the Jhellum?district of Pakistan the day before her death and told them she was ?not at peace? living with her in-laws and was upset, Mr. Hotten said.

The jury was also told that numerous telephone calls were made to Mrs. Mumtaz?s relatives in Pakistan, the emergency services and other individuals in the hours before she was taken to hospital.

During the calls it is alleged that Ul Haq claimed that a ?djinn? ? or evil spirit ? had been sent from Pakistan, while a woman at the house was allegedly heard to say ?don?t call an ambulance yet ? we will cure her ourselves.?

Part-way through Mr. Hotten?s opening speech, Mumtaz collapsed in the dock in a clearly distressed state and the jury was sent home until tomorrow.

The case continues.

Religion of Peace strikes again.
